INGREDIENTS
For the Donair Meat:
- 2 lb (900 g) lean ground beef
- 5 tablespoons Halifax Donair Seasoning A Spice Affair
- 1/4 cup (60 mL) cold water
For the Creamy Garlic Donair Sauce:
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons white vinegar
- 1½ teaspoons Granulated Garlic Mix A Spice Affair
To Serve:
- 4 to 6 pita breads
- Shredded lettuce
- Sliced tomatoes
- Sliced cucumbers
- Thinly sliced red onions
PREPARATION
1. Prepare the donair meat
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, Halifax Donair Seasoning A Spice Affair, and cold water. Mix until evenly combined.
2. Bake
Press the mixture firmly into a lightly greased 5 × 9-inch (23 × 13 cm) loaf pan. Bake for 60 minutes, or until fully cooked. Let rest for 10 minutes before removing from the pan.
3. Prepare the garlic sauce
While the meat is baking, whisk together the mayonnaise, milk, sugar, white vinegar, and Granulated Garlic Mix A Spice Affair until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
4. Slice the donair
For authentic Halifax-style donair slices, refrigerate the cooked meat until completely chilled. Slice thinly, then quickly brown the slices in a hot skillet for 1 to 2 minutes per side.
5. Assemble and serve
Warm the pita breads, then fill them with sliced donair meat, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions. Generously drizzle with the creamy garlic donair sauce and serve immediately.
